Personality Disorders

July 23, 2005 By: Bing Category: Uncategorized

I have been meaning to post this a long time ago due to the experiences I encounter day by day with people who seem to be difficult to get along with. Or maybe I experience these difficulties as a result of my own personality?

Anyway, there are two definitions from the Encarta dictionary and from the Encarta reference article that for me, are the exact meaning of a personality disorder.

*psychiatric disorder: a psychiatric disorder in attitude or behavior that makes it difficult for somebody to get along with other people or to succeed at work or in social situations but that does not involve loss of touch with reality
Microsoft® Encarta® Reference Library 2004. © 1993-2003 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
*disorders in which one’s personality results in personal distress or significantly impairs social or work functioning.
© 1993-2003 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

I would be dramatizing the different personality disorders to let every person who stumbles upon this article grab what they mean. The following are sample scenarios for each type of personality disorder:

ANTISOCIAL
(Husband to wife while she asks for money…)
Husband: (curses and shouts) Bullshit! What will you need the money for?!? I had given you money just the other day! You nincompoop! Trim your expenses!

BORDERLINE
(Boyfriend breaking up with girlfriend…)
Girlfriend: (frantically) No! Please, don’t do this to me! I can’t live without you! If you go, I’ll commit suicide!

AVOIDANT
(Mother wants to introduce her daughter to the visitors…)
Daughter: I don’t wanna be introduced. I don’t know them, Mother. They’ll probably think I look hideous!

DEPENDENT
(A 15-year old seeks Mommy’s help…)
15-year old boy: Mommy, I can’t do this. I can’t tie my shoelace.

HISTRIONIC
(A campus candidate, in a crowd, talking to her friends, in a LOUD voice, MAKING NOISE to be recognized.)
Candidate: Look, people, she is nothing compared to me. She is a loser! I am more eloquent than she is!

NARCISSISTIC
(Man in a bar, showing off…)
Man: Nobody can resist my charm, man. Wait here. (whistles at a GRO) Hey, sweetie, want to spend the night with a good-looking fella?

OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE
(A woman to her maid…)
Woman: How come you do not learn? When you put this towel on the rack, be sure that the edges are parallel to each other. Also, if the curtain is blue, the towel should be blue, too.

PARANOID
(A sicko threatens…)
Brother (to his sister): (Angrily) Go ahead, tell her everything. Tell her stories about me again. You’ll gain something out of it again, anyway! Squealer! I tell you, pick a fight with those you can handle…

SCHIZOID
Girl 1: Hey, here she is!
Girl 2: Bet my ass she wouldn’t spend a sec to even glance.
(Girl 3 passes by, ignoring the two.)
Girl 1: Hi, nice vest you have there.
(Girl 3 stared, with brows arched, and continued walking toward the classroom.)

SCHIZOTYPAL
(A boy suddenly speaks in foreign language, assuming dominance…)
Boy 1: Figlio maschile! Ne’ ragazzo maschile?
Boy 2: Wha – t?? Speak in English, man!
(Boy 1 walks away, smiling.)

DEPRESSIVE
(An overly depressed man relates…)
Man: Everything is useless. What is the point of going to work everyday? We all die after all.

PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE
(A brother ignoring authority…)
Brother: Ate deserves it. She likes to nag. I am not doing anything. Let her do the work. I don’t care if she dies. And please stop bickering with me. You want to be next?

Now, here’s a challenge to you. Create a definition. Without the dictionary and other references.

how are you, darling? long time no hear from you. i frequent your site but you were on hiatus for a while. but i am glad you’re back again, and hope, a newer person.

i chose to give such a definition because i think it would bore everyone to read details. i am not an expert but tried to give something from what i read. glad you liked it!

planned to discuss about treatments, too, but stopped at that because i may look like a fool ha ha

please write more often. i love to read your posts. but the last one you had written, i got tounge-tied, didnt know what to say…

  8. hi sol!

we all have traces of all the disorders. i think they become disorders when they surpass the limits and create something like a difficulty to associate with other people.

    8
  9. major tom, hi!

bits, yes. but if you start having difficulty getting along LOL, mag-isip ka na…

    9
  10. whoa! that was quick. salamat po. now, i believe: “ask and it shall be given.” hehe.

  11. hi, janette! how are you?

oo nga,e. my hubby also gave that similar opinion. the original draft was longer that describes more the disorders kasi there was an exchange of lines between two or more of the characters. it even included a short narration. kaya lang sobra nang haba so i trimmed it down.

thanks sa opinion mo. they are samples lang naman to give a hint what the disorder is like. as the definition tells, pyschiatric disorders are medical conditions involving disturbances to the normal functioning of the mind or body. yun dapat siguro ang tandaan ng lahat.

    11
  12. haha!

i was reminded of my very interesting psychiatric lectures both in my psyche classes and in my “mental ward” assignments..

    impressive definitions huh..
    very lucid and in-depth. :)

[i even thought i'm schizotypal myself, only to realize i was borderline in reality. ;) ]

    12
  13. I have traces of OCD though it’s not a disorder naman, thank God! Teka, busy ako, hehe, nakikisawsaw lang, di ko makigilan sarili ko dahil nakita ko pangalan ko dito…hehehe

    13
  14. Geezh!!! At times I feel i have some bits of each psycho classification. Don’t we have all?

    14
  15. Hi Bing. I’m not sure if all the examples you’ve given can be treated as disorders. Some of it were more angst and frustration.

  21. HI Bing, youre right, we all have traces of these disorders one way or another. I have mild jittery during test which is pretty normal I suppose. IT only becomes a problem if it persists much longer than it should have. Btw, I have seen patients with these disorders in my rotation..it scares me..

    21
  22. Sol and the PTN group!

thanks a lot for dropping by. it is more of an honor than a provilege to be able to participate in your discussion in the future.

i admire the objective of the group. keep on!

    22
  23. honeypooh! hi!

it would be real scary talaga when someone thinks, acts and talks differently, and to add, more difficult to be with because of their unusual reactions.

had a chat friend who has this disorder and it stresses me talking to him. it is so hard to convince him on some matters. he is so much into details with the stories he writes, and more like a combination of antisocial, paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal. he perceives me as PURE. i should stop communicating with him but when he starts chatting with me, i couldnt help myself but feel pity. but he couldnt care less and he thinks that the environ he’s now living in is a cruel community that thinks ill of him. sad, ‘no?

    23
  24. hi, ‘lizbeth!

ah, yes, that chat friend of mine is a bipolar, too. he told me that, natatandaan ko. they are yung tipong people with beautiful minds, ‘no? Ganda rin ng movie – A Beautiful Mind – i was reminded of it nang sabihin mong nakita mo siya kung gaano siya ‘kaganda’ kahit bipolar siya. is your friend a he or a she?

not much of a traveller, i am, too. but i love to view the sceneries.

    30
  31. I’m afraid so. :-) But I have been predominantly known as an obsessive compulsive. :-) Or as my friends would call it, “oc-oc.” (Pronounced “ock-ock.”)

I’m doing well, thanks for asking. Just a bit tuckered out from travelling. I never really was much of a traveller. :-)

Teka lang muna, I have to check if I locked my car…:-D

  33. something’s wrong with you, mikey? maybe not that much he he to discern as a disorder.

    thanks for dropping by.

    33
  34. I’m avoidant. Or at least I think I am if I interpreted the example correctly. What’s strange is that sometimes I’m overly confident; something’s wrong with me, that’s for sure hehe.

    34

    35
  36. OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE
When you put this towel on the rack, be sure that the edges are parallel to each other. Also, if the curtain is blue, the towel should be blue, too.

Exactly what I am accustomed. I drive my husband crazy. I think I am worst than this. Everything has to match — the towels, shower curtain, rags and even containers, bedsheets, dish towels and unbelievably even the plates and placemats. That’s why when i shop for a new color scheme, my pocket’s empty even negative by the end of the shopping spree.

As a matter of fact, I have an entry about being an OC. I do a lot more than this. I am aware but I can’t simply help it and hinder myself from doing it.

    36

    38
  39. wow! evi… oc ka ngang matatawag. for me, as long as it does not affect you and the others around you in a disturbing way, siguro walang dapat ipag-alala. but if it brings problems to your relationship with others, kailangan na sigurong i-assess ang situation.

    39

    Good one!
